Corinna Meckelborg on Food, Allergies, and Family Traditions

What do playdates, celebrations, birthdays, and holidays have in common? You guessed it, food. For many families, food is a part of their identity and sharing it is their favorite way to connect with each other. Just ask my husband’s Italian relatives.

So what happens when you find out your child or someone you love has a food allergy?

In this episode you will hear:

  • What families with food allergies want you to know

  • How the diagnosis of food allergies affects a family’s culture and traditions

  • About an incredible resource that is available for families with food allergies

Key Points:

  • Some food allergies can be life-threatening. Ask questions instead of being dismissive.

  • If your friend, whose family member has a food allergy, prefers to host you it’s not about you. It’s about wanting to create a safe place for their children.

  • Exclude the food, not the child. You can find creative ways to celebrate and keep everyone safe.

  • If you don’t feel comfortable cooking for someone with a food allergy, it’s okay.
